Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Stuttering and Frame Drops

Updated 2026-09-06 · Facts verified against official sources

Most stutter reports trace back to one of two things: the drive the game is installed on, or running out of VRAM. Both produce the same symptom — a hitch when you move into a new area — and both are diagnosable in under a minute.

First: is it a hitch or a low frame rate?

These are different problems with different causes, and treating one as the other wastes time.

SymptomWhat it usually is
Smooth, then a hard freeze for a fraction of a second when entering an areaStreaming stall — storage
Consistently low but steady frame rateGPU below spec for your settings
Frame rate degrades the longer you playVRAM exhaustion
Hitching only during combat with many enemiesCPU-bound

Streaming stalls: the SSD requirement is not a suggestion

Asobo lists a solid-state drive as a requirement, not a recommendation. On a mechanical drive, stalls when the game streams in new geometry are expected behaviour rather than a bug — there is no setting that fixes it.

If the game is on an HDD, move it to an SSD before trying anything else. Everything below assumes you have already done that.

VRAM: the number that matters is not the one on the box

The minimum is 6 GB of VRAM, the recommended tier is 8 GB. If you are at 6 GB and running above the settings the minimum tier targets, you can exhaust VRAM mid-session — which shows up as a frame rate that gets worse the longer you play, and recovers after a restart.

The fix is texture quality, not resolution. Texture settings are the dominant VRAM consumer.

Storage headroom

The install is 75 GB, and a drive that is nearly full behaves badly regardless of type. Leave meaningful free space on the drive the game lives on.

What we are not going to tell you

We are not going to hand you a list of "optimal settings", and we are not going to tell you a specific driver version fixes this. Both change with every patch and every hardware combination, and a stale list is worse than none.

To be confirmed: whether any specific graphics setting in this game is disproportionately expensive. We will add it when we can measure it rather than guess.

Quick answers

  • Will more RAM fix stutter? Not if you already have 16 GB. That is both the minimum and the recommended figure, so RAM is rarely the constraint here.
  • Does an HDD work at all? It is below the stated requirement. Stalls are expected.
  • Why does it get worse over time? That pattern points at VRAM, not the CPU or the drive.
