Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Gameplay Explained

Two things define how this game plays: you shift between two time periods, and you fight rather than sneak. The second one is a departure from the earlier games in the series, and it catches returning players off guard.
The era-shifting mechanic
Sophia moves between her medieval present and the ancient Minoan era that built the labyrinth. The two are causally connected — changing something in the past reshapes the present.
This is the game's central system, not a story device. It underpins the puzzle design: when a mechanism will not respond in one era, the solution generally lies in the other. The Minotaur trial in Chapter 4 is where the mechanic stops being demonstrated and starts being tested.
Combat: a real departure
The earlier entries were built around stealth, avoidance and improvised tools. This one moves toward agile melee — parrying, countering, throwables, and direct engagement with the soldiers hunting you.
The achievement list makes the shift concrete. Confirmed unlocks include killing 25 enemies with critical strikes, stunning 20 enemies with throwables, and stunning three at once with the Echo skill. Those are not objectives you complete by avoiding fights.
If you came from the previous games expecting to route around every encounter, that instinct will make this harder than it should be.
Structure and pacing
| Chapters | 14 |
| Main story | ~11.5 hours |
| Completion | ~14 hours |
| Achievements | 36 |
| Mode | Single-player only |
Linear and chapter-driven. No open world, no multiplayer, no live-service component. The narrow gap between story and completion times tells you the optional content sits on the critical path rather than in separate areas.
Difficulty
Difficulty is adjustable, and nothing in the confirmed achievement list requires a specific setting. That means you can tune combat down without forfeiting anything.
Worth knowing: difficulty does not affect puzzles. A light puzzle takes as long as it takes you to see the solution, at any setting. The variance between players on puzzle chapters is wider than anything difficulty introduces.
Accessibility and platform features
From the Steam listing: full controller support, adjustable text size, camera comfort options, colour alternatives, contrast controls, custom volume controls and adjustable difficulty.
That is a more substantial accessibility set than many releases carry, and worth noting if any of those matter to you.
Official media
The official trailer is embedded on our home page. It gives a clearer read of the combat rhythm than a description does — particularly the pacing of parries and counters, which is where the shift from the earlier games shows most.
